Education
The public education system of Chelsea is top-rate. P.S. 11 is a local school that offers strong gifted, music and athletic programs, and includes an indoor swimming pool. Bayard Rustin High School for the Humanities is a public college-preparatory high school with special programs in medical math and creative writing. The Fashion Institute of Technology offers higher education in fashion and design. For hands-on training for technical careers, an excellent education can be found at the Apex Technical School.
Economy and Job Market
Chelsea has a thriving local economy. It has a large variety of different high-energy businesses, including a variety of restaurants and different shops. Many people amongst the area’s large creative community are served by Tekserve, a vast Apple computer repair shop that serves the nearby Silicon Alley. Google recently opened their software engineering office in the heart of Chelsea, the biggest site outside of their California location. The area is increasingly becoming home to doctors, lawyers, and business owners who all either work in the area or nearby neighborhoods of Manhattan. Chelsea is a popular alternative shopping destination with Barneys CO-OP, Comme Des Garcons, and Balenciaga boutiques, as well as being near Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, and Christian Louboutin. The new Chelsea Piers and Waterside Park also provide a huge economic boom to the district.
Attractions/Points of Interest
The club scene in Chelsea is hot and happening. Some of the most popular current clubs are the Marquee, Bungalow 8, and Serena at the Chelsea Hotel. The Chelsea Hotel is rich in history and a famous attraction in itself, having inspired a song by Leonard Cohen. For those who are into the comedy scene, they can enjoy great shows at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade. There are over 200 art galleries in the area and any art lover can find an endless connection of art to explore.
Parks and Recreation
The biggest recreational spot is the exciting Chelsea Piers. Originally the city’s primary luxury cruise terminal, the northern piers are now part of an entertainment and sports complex operated by Roland W. Betts. They offer something for people of all ages: golf, skating, bowling, rock climbing, batting cages, ice-skating, horses, gymnastics, biking, and roller-blading. It also features two restaurants, a marine center, a television studio, and a health club with a deluxe spa. For those craving more green grass and river views, you can go for a stroll, go for a bike ride, or roller-blade down to the Hudson River Esplanade.
